Ribbon Microphones
RssI often receive questions about the performance of different foil thicknesses in ribbon microphone motors. The main thing people are interested in is if thinner foils result in "more highs". So, I've tried to summarize my replies in this post and explain the basics of the topic...
Finally, after a very long wait (I mean, very long wait!) I have received two custom designed ribbon foil corrugation machines for our microphone workshop. These tools are real monsters! Customs-made brass gears, aviation grade bearings and pressure adjustment mechanism - all of these feature are packed in the neat looking anodized aluminum chassis...
The first assembled prototype of a new RE-323 ribbon microphone motor with a ribbon installed! The mechanical design is quite sophisticated, but all the parts come together neatly with just a tiny bit of filing for FR4 pads. Cool, taking into account that they were machined by three different local contractors...
